Pigment spots are changes in normal skin color due to imbalances in the skin pigment melanin. A distinction is made between:
Dark Pigment Spots (Hyperpigmentation)
- Excess melanin in certain areas of the skin.
Typical forms: Sun spots (lentigines) – caused by UV radiation, mostly on the face and hands. - Age spots
UV-induced pigment accumulations in old age. - Melasma
Hormonally induced, often symmetrical spots (e.g. during pregnancy). - Skin injuries or inflammation
After acne, eczema, or injuries.
Light Pigment Spots (Hypopigmentation)
- Melanin deficiency or loss in certain areas of the skin.
Typical causes: Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation - Scars
Especially after deep injuries, pigmentation can be lost. - Disease-related loss of pigmentation (vitiligo)
